The Wedding Feast at Cana

The Wedding Feast at Cana. (John 2:1-11)

The Wedding Feast at Cana has always been my favorite miracle.  It shows Mary as normal human mother asserting her authority. Let me retell the story with some explanation.

Mary says to her Son that they have no wine.  The is pure motherspeak.  What appears to be a simple declarative sentence is in fact a command.  Mothers talk this way all the time.  The Son recognizes it as a command and protests that it is not time.  Mary then does another motherly thing.  She totally ignores his response and tell the waiters to do whatever He says.  The Son thinks about it and then does what He was told to do.  It is pretty clear who is in charge here.  We are dealing here with an independent widow in her late 40's.

This is typical mother behavior.  (Mine certainly behaved this way.)  Mothers are still the same after 2000 years.

Observations.

1.    This may be Jesus’s first recorded miracle, but it is not His first.  His mother knew that he could do it.

2.    If you have petition, you may have better luck asking Mary for help rather than going directly to the Son.
